The recent heatwave that has swept the UK the past few months has left everyone clamouring for any way to stay cool. So, when my other half booked a surprise staycation at The Curtain hotel a few weekends ago I was packed and out of the door before you could say “rooftop pool”.
Taking cues from its namesake (not the road it is located on but the theatre that used to be around the corner) and from the industrial heritage of the area, the design is a beautiful blend of warehouse living splashed with showbiz glam. Dark, polished wood floors contrast with exposed ceilings and brickwork and 1980 style photography of musical icons pepper the walls.
The rooms have a loft-living-Manhattan vibe going on, with floor to ceiling windows that offer a full-frontal view of the brutalist multi-story car park across the way – no joke it serves as a great reminder you’re in East London, not Manhattan.
After checking in in the beautiful lobby which is draped with greenery and velvet sofas, we headed straight to the rooftop bar and nestled into the cosy deck chairs that surround the Lido with a bottle of fizz and lashings of sun cream for the afternoon. On return to our room the lovely hotel staff had left the winning combination of prosecco and cake as a birthday treat. A perfect way to make us feel right at home.
A slice of Manhattan slap bang in the middle of Shoreditch, I would absolutely recommend!
